Pics and review by Swissman

I was very excited to see what I call the “oldschool” lineups of Anthrax and Priest. Due to the rain we left around 11:30 AM because yahoo maps told us that it would take at least 2 1/2 hours to drive up through the wine country and the windy hills. We got there after almost 3 1/2 hours due to the fact that there was traffic and we took a wrong turn, almost like straight out of the movie Deliverance.

We finally drive down to the resort or what they advertised as a resort and checked in. I have to say that our room was the second worst place I have ever stayed at. I do think they had the same interior decorator as San Quentin State Prison where all the die hard criminals are locked up. Oh well on to the review.

This was an early show because it is a resort or so they say and they have a 10 o’clock curfew. I picked up my photo pass (many thanks to Chris from Anthrax) and met up with my buddies. We got some killer seats in the 9th and 10th row yes it was an amphitheater style arena, all seats. The venue held about 5000 people and I would say roughly 3000 head banging maniacs showed up. It was good to see a lot of parents bringing their kids to introduce them to some kick ass old school metal.  Not bad for the venue being so far out in the boonies. It was also pretty cold and it rained the whole day. Luckily there was no rain during the show.

Anthrax started sharp at 6:45 with the blues brothers intro. Then they broke into the first song which was “Among The Living”. I have to say Anthrax tore it up. They were on fire. This lineup to me is what old school Anthrax is all about and again I wasn’t disappointed. Joey was on a roll and so were all the other guys. They were in harmony like the never stopped playing together. I have seen them in this lineup 3 times this year and they get better and better each time.  I was hoping that Joey would bring out his headgear for Indians but unfortunately he didn’t.

The set list was as follows:

Among the Living
Got The Time
Caught In A Mosh
N.F.L. Efilnikufesin
I’m The Man
I Am The Law

As you can see, they played a fairly short set again due to the curfew and Priest playing almost 2 hours.

After they finished, we went backstage (thanks Thrax) to chat with Anthrax and see the meet and greet. The guys were very nice, I had an interesting conversation with Dan Spitz about his watch making endeavor. I didn’t know he had been doing this since he was 8 years old. His grandfather used to be a watchmaker as well.

Well all I can say Anthrax played an awesome show and you guys should go out and see them if you get a chance. I hope they record another album with this lineup.

After the short visit backstage, we had to go back out to make sure I could make my way upfront to get some decent Priest pictures. Priest was totally amazing. I can’t describe it in any other way. The whole stage show was awesome. Rob was in a good mood, involving the crowd. I don’t even think he used any teleprompters. He moved all over the place. Quite frankly the way the stage was setup everybody moved around, up the stairs and on the little balcony stages. The set list was incredible. Not too much of the new stuff. I don’t like the new record that much so that was fine by me.

Here is the set list:

Electric Eye
Metal Gods
Riding On The Wind
A Touch Of Evil
Judas Rising
I’m A Rocker
Breaking The Law
Diamonds And Rust
Worth Fighting For
Beyond The Realms Of Death
Turbo Lover
Victim Of Changes

Hellbent For Leather
Living After Midnight
You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’

The band went backstage a couple of times to take minor breaks while Rob was working the crowd. I guess the guys are getting a bit older and tire a bit easier but they still tear it up like back in the days.

Rob changed his jacket about 6 or 7 times and brought out his Harley Davidson. Judas Priest played a killer set and I would say they played until almost 10 PM. It was amazing to watch the metal community (kids and older guys) sing along to these classic Judas Priest songs. It clearly showed that metal is alive and well in the US. If you don’t believe me…You’ve got another thing coming.
