Hailing from the sunny state of California, My Ruin is out to rip your face off with its Sabbath induced female fronted metal onslaught. With their last disc being on Century Media My Ruin were ready to take the world by storm but time changes everything and now the band is back with a new line-up and a new label (their own) and a take no prisoners attitude. With the recordings about to begin for this CD the band found itself without a rhythm section so Mike Murphy not only handles the six string duties on the disc but he also provides all drums and bass. Murphy is a man of many talents indeed and his work is augmented by vocalist Tairrie B.

The Brutal Language is indeed that, brutal. The soundscape is made up of sludgy doomy Sabbath riffs over which Tairrie B snarls with the ferocity of a wild animal. “Summer of Hell”, “Spilling Open” and “Silverlake 6751″ all benefit from Murphy’s sense of melody which is in contrast to Tairrie B’s blazing vocals. She puts every ounce of herself into her performance and at times seems to take the screaming a bit too far but those moments are few and far between. It is when she reverts to an almost spoken voice that she loses the edge in her voice. “Vince Vaughn” is sung almost entirely in this way and it doesn’t stand up to the other material on the CD.

It took a few listens to really get into this CD. The first couple of spins were nothing special but then the catchy guitar riffs of Murphy began to take hold and the venom spitting vocals of Tairrie B. took on a life of their own. Why the band would choose to release this CD on their own after having previous release on century Media is a question I have to ask myself but as long as they create high quality metal like this who cares?
