Sabatan are a new-ish (formed in 1995) band out of Madrid playing straight ahead heavy metal, no frills, no bullshit, just heavy riffs and gritty vocals. Though relatively unknown, the band does have some more famous ties, as Elisa Candelas (Dreamaker) was once their vocalist, and current vocalist Miguel plays in a band called Timeless with Markus Grosskopf (Helloween). Unlike the power metal side bands, Sabatan eschew anything not born of scruffy looking jean-jacketed metalheads living in some dirty party house in 1984.
Opener “Serpent King” is a fast opener that features the lead guitars of David Ballester and Miguel’s vocals, both top-notch for this brand of metal. The chorus to this song is damn infectious too. The other standout song of the four offered is “Fire Angel”, a more mid-paced groove song that is equally heavy and possibly even catchier than “Serpent King”. The last two songs, while OK are not as good and don’t make as much of an impression. Part of the problem could be that they drag on past 5-minutes which, for this style is just too long. These songs need to get in, hit hard, and get the fuck out kamikaze style. That said, there is a lot of potential to build on here and I can see these guys being a blast on stage. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
