O.K., now THIS shit rules! From the shores of British Columbia comes two-man band Soulscar with their particular brand of melodic death. ABANDONED is the third demo CD from these guys and they were cool enough to include the previous two (LOST IN LIFE & ESCAPING) as unlisted bonus tracks. I remember hearing a track off ESCAPING called “Bliss Killer” and thinking that it was absolutely awesome, but then I kinda lost track of the band. Well, “Bliss Killer” is on this disc, along with 11 (“Escaping” is included twice) more original death metal songs.

Soulscar is the baby of Andrew Staehling and his partner Chris Warunki. From what I can tell, Warunki plays drums, while Staehling does everything else! Pretty impressive considering that Staehling also has another band called Humungus (where are they bud? They were killer!). Anyway, Soulscar’s music is fast and furious, basically sounding like a hyped-up and still hungry In Flames…but more aggressive. Warunki’s drumming is astounding – this guy is a drum-god in the making! Staehling has a great growl voice and wrings some kickass riffs out of his guitar. Just check out “Cutter” and the instrumental “Ever Alone” for proof. Hell, the fact that I’m actually praising an instrumental should be proof enough that this is good (I usually can’t stand ‘em!).

Also included is a cover of Megadeth’s “This Was My Life” which is better than the original IMO. It’s more aggressive and doesn’t sound as slick as the Mega-version. So, if you’re in the market for some new melodic death metal, Soulscar has got the perfect disc for you!
