Aw!!! A little change of pace from the one man bands that I have been reviewing. I have in front of me an 8 song CD that follows in the best tradition of Black Sabbath, Corrosion of Conformity and some EyeHateGod added with just enough originality thrown in to make it interesting. The band hails from Ohio in the U.S. and is the amalgam of a number of bands including God From Machine and Dolly Trauma. The lineup on this disc is Brad Thorla: bass and guitar, Ryan Burgy: vocals and Chris Chiera on guitar. The band has since added some new members in Matt Bremkamp on guitar and Paul Bartholet on the bass guitar.
The outlook that these guys have on life is pretty bleak as witnessed by their lyrics.”Take Me Up on That” opens up the disc with a tale of personal woe. The music is upbeat in the vein of “Lord of this World” by Sabbath. Great song. “So Was Red” ends with a great argument between the guys in the band ( I assume) arguing about how the music was stolen from Black Sabbath. I thought it was pretty funny and a nice homage to their influences. “Fearless Shadow” is another asskicker. Damn good song with a great solo by Chiera. Damn this guy is good. “Backdoor Thing” is a great COC influenced track. The disc is closed out by “One More For The Road”. No description is needed about the contents of this song.
Sofa King Killer certainly have their shit together. I have to admit that I am not a big fan of the screaming vocals but they are done very well. The music itself is what draws me to this CD. The sound is full and they have the whole, Black Sabbath/COC/Doom/Stoner thing down to a T. Drop by their website and check them out www.envy.nu/skk/
