Can you say “time warp”? Well Witchburner sure can and depending what type of 80’s music you like this is not necessarily a bad thing. If you like early 80’s thrash (and you had better!!) such as the early Kreator material up to Terrible Certainty, then do your ears a favor and check these guys out! Not only is the music classic, but so is their image – bullet belts and ripped jean jackets (covered in patches of course, those were the days). The individual band pics inside are also classic and brings a smile to my face. The picture of Simon Seegal (guitar) is the runner up for evilness, he looks fucking possessed! But the picture of Tony Skudlarek (bass) takes the cake. This guy looks totally nuts decked out in chain mail and a pointy metal helmet….brutal! haha. The other guys in the band are Christoph Ungemach (guitar) and drummer/vocalist(!!) Tankred Best. I don’t know how Tankred pulls off the drums and vocals live. It’s not very often you see a band with the drummer doing vocals!!

Ok image aside, can the music stand up? You better believe it!!! This CD was an immediate like for me. As soon as I popped it in the player I was ready to play air guitar and bang my head. Totally metal…evil, aggressive, noisy, raw, powerful, thrash!! While this might not be the most original band on the scene, and the riffs might not be super technical, what they are playing is catchy and it’s awesome! I love the vocals – a cross between Mille (Kreator) and Rob Urbinati (Sacrifice). The CD is full of excellent material – “Thrash Attack”, the title of the song says it all here. “Eternal Terror” with it’s intro of war sounds is another CD highlight…yeah – wow a billion bands have used that as an intro but I actually felt like was in the middle of it when listening to this. The CD’s title track “Blasphemic Assault” is great, cool chorus. Drummer Tankred is a fine drummer I love the sweet double kicks on “Storm of Hate”!! The track “Bestial Command” is most like Kreator to me. I can’t name which song, but the chorus sounds like a song by them. The last track on the CD, “Raw Energy” is a bit of an anomaly, but it’s cool. The vocals on this one are not as venomous, sounding something like older Razor (man remember them? “Evil Invaders!!!”). It “almost” has a punk feel to it but not in a bad way. This is the song on the CD that has been rattling around in my skull for the past week! “Come on, raw energy, come on, gonna kick your ass, come on. Raw ennnnnn-errr-gee!!!” :-).

This is the second CD from Witchburner. The first CD being the independently released and self-titled “Witchburner.” Well now they are on a label, Germany’s “Undercover Records” and with luck more people will hear more about this band and their classis thrash metal attack!
