Well the new Sepultura is out and what can I say but thank god this is not Roots part two!! That’s the good news, the bad news is that Sepultura will never top Arise or Beneath The Remains (my personal favorite). I almost didn’t even bother buying this CD because I was very worried that no one could fill Max’s shoes or that this would continue in the vein of the last CD. However, I figured that Against couldn’t be as bad as the non-metal stuff Max is spewing out with Soulfly. Well I was right! This kicks the shit all outta Soulfly. I hope Max is green with envy! This only goes to prove to me that Max was NOT the heart of Sepultura’s songwriting. A couple of songs on Against have a bit too much of a punk edge (i.e. Against), you know the story fast-paced yet extremely simple 2-3 chord riffs with barking vocals…nothing original there. I really dig the freaky Japanese drum shit on the song “Kamaitachi” though, sure its not death metal but it is attention grabbing. So could they of picked a better vocalist? Well maybe but they didn’t go wrong with Derrick Green.
