“A cyberspeed masterpiece CD for rabid kat slaves, cyberfreaks & Kat-possessed geniuses!”
The Great Kat’s newest CD Guitar Goddess offers a short blast of intense hyperspeed guitar playing that most people will have to listen to a few times to pick up on. The songs are all around the 2 minute mark and Kat packs as many notes into those 2 minute tracks as some players use on a full CD (or in Eric Clapton’s case his entire career!!). Kat is no new-comer to the world of guitar playing.
Her warp speed playing style has been around since the 1980’s. My first taste of her unique musical style was in the form of her video for “Metal Messiah.”
I have decided to approach this review by ONLY looking at the music on the CD. Many listeners, and reviewers alike, focus on Kat’s personality and her not so small ego. Therefore, let’s get rid of all the glitter, attitude and self aggrandizing bullshit and see if this CD delivers.
The CD begins with a hyperspeed version of Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville.” The drums are noticeably boring right away (boom smack boom smack…etc…) The guitar tone is shrill, but what is being played is amazing. It will take a few listens to comprehend exactly what is going on in this instrumental song that clocks in at 2mins 11secs.
Next up is “Dominatrix” with a total disorderly introduction. It then cuts into a decent heavy rhythm followed by kat screeches and blisteringly melodic guitar playing. The song ends as haphazardly as it began with pitter patter drums and off the wall soloing.
Third on the CD is “Feast of the Dead.” which contains an excellent metal riff that is the best thing on the CD. Luckily there is not lead guitar 100% of the time in this song. This thereby gives an amount of breathing room….something that is not found in many of Kat’s songs. This is perhaps the only criticism I can make with regards to her playing.
Lastly is another classical rendition, Sarasate’s Gypsy Violin Waltz “Zigeunernveisen,” featuring a violin/guitar duo that is done quite well. Again the drums are too simple throughout this song. Kat could definitely use a more intense and technical drummer.
So bottom line…is this worth picking up? Well I guess that depends on what you’re looking for. Don’t be fooled, if you like traditional classical music you will not find it here! Kat’s re-workings of these classics are hardly recognizable as the original composition. If you’re into metal then you might appreciate Kat. In a way, Kat’s music is much more intense than most death metal bands but it does not sound like it at all! If you’re into the guitar hero types like Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani, or Vinnie Moore and you think they are Neo-Classical well, Kat is not really in their category. There is no pentatonic blues happening here!! If you have an open mind and an appreciation for technicality, speed, and the slightly perverse then Kat is your god.
