Job(s) @ Metal Rules: Music Reviews
Length of Time with MR: Since December 2008
Brief description of how you came to MR:
I’d been a fan of the site for a while and saw the “help wanted” posting. I submitted some writing samples and the rest is history!
Best thing about working for MR:
There are plenty of metal sites on the net that revel in hipster commentary or snarky scene snobbery, but MR was built from and maintained out of a genuine love of METAL. We've got an excellent group of contributors and and even better reader base. You guys rule.
Worst thing about working for MR:
Did you not read the above? Not a damn thing.
How/when you first got into metal:
In 1988, my buddy turned me on to a band called Metallica and their new album "...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL." All bets were off after that, metal was a way of life.
Favorite Metal Genre(s):
Doom/stoner, old school death/grind, anything that lives off the beaten path.
Least favorite Metal Genre(s): I have zero tolerance for any music, regardless of genre, that lacks substance.
First Metal CD ever bought: Anthrax, STATE OF EUPHORIA on cassette - $9.99 at my local K-Mart. I was pissed off because my copy didn't have the lyrics printed in the booklet. Censorship in action!
First Metal concert: DIO on the “Lock Up The Wolves” tour, with Yngwie Malmsteen as the opening act.
Band or other music experience:
Nothing serious, but I’d love to run my own label someday.
Harvard research has empirically proven that Black Sabbath is indeed the greatest band to have ever existed.
Favorite Non-Metal bands/artists: Bad Religion is a band that every Metalhead should get to know. Great riffs, crazy energy, and some of the most profound lyrics ever put to paper.
Most underrated bands/artists: Anything that Scott “Wino” Weinrich is associated with. Limp Bizkit can sell millions of records and Wino ends up owing Columbia Records 20 grand? Is there any justice in the world?
Favorite album cover: Cathedral's FOREST OF EQUILIBRIUM
10 favorite albums (as it stands at this particular moment in time):
1. Black Sabbath – Vol. 4
2. Black Sabbath – Heaven & Hell
3. King Diamond - Them
4. Cathedral - Forest of Equilibrium
5. Death - Human
6. The Obsessed - Lunar Womb
7. Saint Vitus - V
8. Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick
9. Deicide - Deicide
10. Candlemass - Live!
Hobbies: Good books, good music, good food, good beer. Not always in that order.
Favorite films: Frankenstein/The Bride of Frankenstein, The Exorcist, The Silence of the Lambs, Seven, quality horror films in general.
Favorite books: World War Z by Max Brooks, anything written by Agatha Christie, Dean Koontz, Stephen King.
Favorite TV shows: The Simpsons, Dexter, American Horror Story
Favorite food: Pub food, animal flesh cooked over fire
Favorite drink: Guinness, Samuel Adams seasonal wares, quality microbrews
Which songs should be played at your funeral: Black Sabbath – Electric Funeral
Final Thoughts: Keep sending those demos and indie releases! I love hearing from new bands who believe in their craft. No guarantees that it'll get a review, but everything gets a listen.
