Classic Pick: Simon and Garfunkel, Thin Lizzy
Edgar Allan Poe ~ Need I say more? The undisputed master of horror and darkness.
MR Nickname: HannTu (“hantu” in Malay means “ghost” or “evil spirit”)
Tattoos/Piercings: No tattoos, used to have 4 piercings in my left ear, but they got infected so had to let them close up.
Non-MR job: None at the moment, studying law in London.
Jobs at MR: Reviews and interviews mostly. It’s great to go for gigs and write about my experiences. I've also taught myself SLR photography especially in the live context, which I consider one of my major achievements. Did it all on my own.
Length of time with MR: Since March 2007.
Brief description of how you came to MR: I saw the ad on the front page for new writers, sent in some samples of my writing to EvilG and was accepted. To be honest, I asked to be a transcriptionist quite some time back but never got a reply. But now I’m in and I’m not leaving!! Hahaha!!
Best thing about being with MR: Just being IN the scene. Coming from Malaysia where there is no scene, it’s just unbelievable to be IN metal at all, and contributing (hopefully) and participating in some way or another just makes it all better.
Worst thing about being with MR: Now that I'm established in London with all the contacts, there is no worst thing about being with MR. It's not work, it's not a chore, it's a fucking love affair with metal that keeps our writers driving on with dedication. Also, it's the opportunity to interview people like Alex Webster and Matt Barlow, and to just be part of the scene and contributing in any way that makes the occasional aggro worth while.
How/when you first got into metal: Have to thank a punk friend of mine who lent me his Metallica S&M tape because he didn’t quite like it. I heard Kirk’s solos and immediately wanted to play guitar. Rock guitar. The rest is obvious I guess. I can honestly say MASTER OF PUPPETS sealed the entire thing in concrete, and up till now, regardless of what Metallica do, I still have a little soft spot for them…
Favourite Metal Genre: Since this profile was last updated (sometime in 2007), I've gotten heavily into all forms of death metal, and other than listening to new stuff for review purposes, you'll still find me spinning anything and everything from Entombed to Suffocation, from Cannibal Corpse to Vader, from Cynic to Cryptopsy.
Least favourite metal genre: Kvlt black metal. I just can’t stand the philosophy of making it sound as shitty as possible. I also dislike monotonous doom metal, the worst gigs I’ve been to have been doom bands. Anything nu– or –core (In Flames post-CLAYMAN). And I fucking hate emo.
First metal CD ever bought: First cassette I ever bought was the Black Album. First CD might have been Maiden’s POWERSLAVE or NUMBER OF THE BEAST.
First metal concert: I saw Uriah Heep in Malaysia back in 2001/2002, that was my first rock concert. First metal concert was in London in 2005, HammerFall opening for Stratovarius, and to be honest I went there for HammerFall.
Band or Other Music Experience: Was in a metal “band” back in high school but it never went anywhere mainly because we all liked different stuff and I was quite shit at guitar. Played guitar in a recent Blues Brothers tribute show if that counts. Not been in a band otherwise.
Favourite bands/artistes: Fucking hell. Erm, at the beginning it was all about Metallica. Fanboy, and unashamed of it. Then obviously on to Slayer and Megadeth. Ah heck, I’ll just look at my Itunes list ~ Amon Amarth, Annihilator, Arch Enemy, At the Gates, Avantasia, Behemoth, Blind Guardian, Cannibal Corpse, Children of Bodom, Cradle of Filth (some), Dark Tranquility, Death, Deicide, Destruction, Dimmu Borgir, DragonForce (sue me!), Dream Evil, Edguy, Emperor, Exodus, Firewind, Gamma Ray, Grave Digger, HammerFall, Helloween, Hypocrisy, Iced Earth, Iron Maiden, King Diamond, Kreator, Manowar (some), Marduk, Megadeth, Mercyful Fate, Metallica, Morbid Angel, Nevermore, Nile, Slayer, Sodom, Soilwork, Testament, and there’s probably a few more than I’ve missed out.
Least favourite bands/artistes: Can’t be arsed to look into genres that I don’t like. Unashamedly, I’ll blank anything that fits into the genres above that I dislike, so I won’t give stuff like new Trivium a chance for example. There’s too much good material (old and new) to check out, I still am not as knowledgable about my metal as a lot of other metalheads, and that needs to improve. Usually I will have pet hate albums that arise out of checking out a band’s catalogue, but that usually means I have liked the band in the first place to check it out. Examples: In Flames REROUTE and SOUNDTRACK, Annihilator’s ALL FOR YOU and obviously RISK and ST ANGER.
Most overrated bands/artistes: Kamelot. They're good but not deserving of much of the praise levelled at them.
Most underrated bands/artistes: Primordial or Moonsorrow.
Favourite album cover: Has to be the REIGN IN BLOOD cover. Scared the pants off my mom who saw it on my table. Close second is the jester on Edguy’s MANDRAKE.
10 Favourite albums:
Not in any order, off the top of my head ~
Slayer REIGN IN BLOOD
CD you hate to admit is part of your collection:
Spoken languages: English, Malay, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien.
Interests/Hobbies: Manchester United, guitar, Metal-Rules, politics, my dogs, reading Jurisprudence, photography, good food and sitting around being lazy.
Pet peeves: My wireless internet (what the fuck happened to good ol’ cable connection) and generally technology when it doesn’t work. Close minded people, and stemming from that, know-it-all self righteous people. That includes religious “holier than thou” people, environmental green nuts, fundamentalists and extremists in any way, moral guardians, pretentious film/book/wine/food/anything else “experts”, and sadly, some metalheads who are tr00er than tr00. Other than that, I’m the live and let live type.
Favourite films: I’m more of “Favourite Director” type, so usually anything by Stanley Kubrick, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Kevin Smith, Quentin Tarantino and Oliver Stone.
Favourite books: Again, more of favourite authors. Tolkien definitely, Stephen Fry, Salman Rushdie, Tolstoy, Evelyn Waugh, PG Wodehouse, Vladimir Nabokov, Anthony Burgess, Roald Dahl, Paul Theroux, and John Mortimer.
Favourite TV Shows: I hate all that American drama crap. British comedy is unbeatable in my view and the old stuff is still funny as hell today: Monty Python, Only Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers, Blackadder, The Two Ronnies, Porridge, Have I Got News For You, Black Books, QI and tons more. The Simpsons are great too but losing it a little.
Favourite drink: Vodka shots or a pint of Carling or Stella Artois, depending on how pissed I want to get at the end of the night.
Which song should be played at your funeral: Orion, definitely.
Person you’d most like to meet:
Deceased: Cliff Burton, Dimebag Darrell, Ronnie Barker.
Biggest thrill in life so far: Just being so close to the metal scene after looking in on it from a distance for so long. It’s a privilege.
Final comments about myself: I’m a nice guy really…
