The Matadors
Sweet Revenge

2008, Stumble Records
Rating: 4.5/5

SWEET REVENGE is the highly anticipated follow-up to 2006’s HORRORBILLY 9000. Hooch Parkins and band finally have released these dozen new songs much to the praise and satisfaction of fans and critics alike.

This disc is a little more Rockabilly than their previous effort but it is still distinctly Matadors. With song titles such as “ Faith In Booze”, “I Love You When You Died” and “If You’re Gonna Bitch (I’m Gonna Drink)” there is no denying the lyrical content is slightly different than the original Rockabilly music of the 50’s. The latter is one of the standout tracks on the album with its upbeat rockin’ style and true to life lyrics that kind of make you wonder if they really are true. The music itself is a slightly punk’d and rocked up Rockabilly with twisted and slightly tongue in cheek lyrics. Songs like “Drunk and Drivin’” is one that emphasizes this twisted life stories theory.

A highly recommended release from one of Canada’s own. One of the best albums you will spin this year.
