At The Gates

With the heavens threatening to open up again, I suppose this was a fitting farewell to At The Gates, who announced that this would be the last show they would ever play in the UK. What better memories of England to take away with them, if not the British weather?

As they did at Wacken, they put on another superb live show that drew material from all their studio albums, but most heavily from their most mature and most popular album, 1995’s SLAUGHTER OF THE SOUL, and the sentimental favourite for being their last album before disbanding. Almost every song on SLAUGHTER OF THE SOUL was played, which shows how highly the band themselves rate it.

Tompa Lindberg is perhaps not the greatest of frontmen, but he certainly does more than his fair share of work to get the crowd pumped up; the wet miserable masses valiantly cheered as the familiar songs kept rolling by, never to be revisited, at least not by the Swedes themselves: ‘Slaughter of the Soul’, ‘Terminal Spirit Disease’, ‘Raped By The light of Christ’, ‘Under A Serpent Sun’, ‘The Burning Darkness’ and so on.

It was a visibly emotional Lindberg who announced that the final song would be their last ever played in England, ‘Kingdom Gone’. Appropriate enough, that the once-upon-a-time kings of Gothenburg death metal have now departed these shores. And still the rain kept falling.
