Econoline Crush
Ignite

2008, Fontana North
Rating: 4/5

Canada’s own Econoline Crush come to us with a new drummer and killer new album to boot. Former Alice Cooper/Theory of A Deadmand/Vince Neil drummer Brent Fitz is now behind the kit for EC. Fitz brings his heavy yet melodic playing to the band and adds a bit of a new dimension to their sound.

The disc begins with “Could Have Been” which is fairly heavy on the programming until the drums and guitar kick in then it becomes a good heavy rock song. For purpose of comparison only it is similar to what Bowie did a few years back with his EARTHLING disc, just heavier. The second cut on the album is the first single release: “Dirty”. Like it’s name it begins with a cool dirty guitar riff which carries on throughout the track. Singer Trevor Hurst just lets loose on this song and belts it out full force. Next up is “Psychotic” which starts off like a bad techno song (then again is there such a thing as good techno?) but quickly picks up and becomes a decent rock song. This blend of the 2 styles is somewhat original. This listener is NOT a fan of computer generated music at all but this is listenable thanks to actual guitar and drums. The CD is rounded out by a few more great tracks such as “Get Out Of My Way” with its anthem like beat while “Hole In My Heart” just screams single. Another Bowie-esque track is “Unbelievable” with its programming styling.

The formula of killer drums, distorted guitar and computer programming sounds bad in print but just the opposite through the speakers. A fresh sounding album for the summer.
