Blackmore’s Night

Paris Moon

2007, SPV

Rating: 3.5/5

Former Deep Purple and Rainbow guitarist releases another offering from his Blackmore’s Night project. This project has nothing to do with his former band(s) and shows no resemblance to them whatsoever. The music here is more traditional and folk with minimal rock built in.

The DVD was filmed during their first appearance in Paris in their entire 10 year career while in support of the THE VILLAGE LANTERNE album. Hearing them performing songs live from their entire catalog you gain a bit of appreciation for them. The combination of video and audio provides the viewer with a more pleasurable experience that wasn’t captured in the studio. The setting of a Paris theater is the ideal setting for a show of this nature. The band are captured in an intimate setting which creates a calm and relaxing mood to the viewers. The combination of Ritchie’s guitar (and other instruments), Nights voice and the flowing melodies of the songs creates an aural treat. There is even a performance of “Soldier of Fortune” that Blackmore wrote with David Coverdale many moons ago.

An interesting blend of instruments and music that may not be for all. An intimate and live setting is the better way to appreciate the band as the magic is not captured on a studio release.
