Katatonia Interview
with Drummer Daniel Liljekvist
Interview by Kirsty Birkett-Stubbs

As masters of melancholy, Katatonia have been a little bit like a perpetual raincloud on the musical weather map, since they appeared on the scene in 1991. Within these darker thunderclouds though, is a fascinating portrayal of humanity and the sadness that touches us all at times. With each album Katatonia develop and deepen their sound, and latest offering Dead End Kings is no different. Stilling the rain for a moment, drummer Daniel Liljekvist gives us a fleeting insight into Katatonia’s world…

The mighty Jalometalli Open Air Metal festival strikes back once again with a killer line-up to maintain its metallic lofty status on the Finnish festival map. The festival is known for relying on an old school metal approach offering traditional metal to extreme metal with classic metal to the extreme black metal. The festival also paid attention to young rising and local bands who played the small third stage. That was unique and thankfully most of the bands sounded killer. The Metal Rules team hit the grounds of Oulu to see several absolutely killer bands. The whole Jalometalli as a festival is so unique and one of kind that anyone reading this article should take a glance at the offering of the festival. Here is a brief article on the fest.

Interview with Michael Wilton, Eddie Jackson & Scott Rockenfield
Conducted by Robert Williams
Video Editing and Photography courtesy of Sandra Torres
Seattle's progressive metal legends Queensrÿche have recently been under the watchful eyes of the global metal community, due in no small part to a momentous shift in personnel with the exit of longtime vocalist Geoff Tate and the introduction of the band's new vocalist Todd La Torre (Crimson Glory). A mountain of controversy surrounding the departure of the band's famed former vocalist resulted in court proceedings between both parties over the use of the band's name and likeness, not to mention a brief war of words exchanged in the press. When I learned that I would be speaking with founding members Michael Wilton, Eddie Jackson and Scott Rockenfield I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the chat but found myself somewhat relieved that the band had decided to take the high road and focus our conversation on their current plans with their new vocalist Todd La Torre, what it's like for them to once again perform their early material in concert and of course a more revitalized return to metal, in general, following the uninspired modern hard rock of last year's "Devoted To Chaos". The band were in high spirits, excited about things to come and as evidenced by their performance later that night at the South Texas Rock Fest In San Antonio, Texas I'd say, rightfully so. |

THE CIRCUS, HELSINKI
17'TH OCTOBER 2012
REVIEW AND PICS BY MARKO SYRJALA
American heavy metal band, W.A.S.P., has been annual visitors in Finland during the last decade and this year was no exception. Since there's no new album to promote, this tour was built upon the bands 30’TH Anniversary. The ads said that this tour is going to be the biggest spectacle W.A.S.P. has ever created and the message was well received since all four shows in Finland were practically sold out a long time ago. About 1500 eager people arrived to The Circus and they were ready witness the spectacle.

STEEL PANTHER
feat. KOBRA AND THE LOTUS
THE CIRCUS, HELSINKI
21'TH OCTOBER 2012
REVIEW AND PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJALA
American glam metal parody band Steel Panther returned to Finland just six months after the previous visit. Although there’s no new album to promote on this round it seems that there’s still plenty of demand for these glam heroes. Last March, the Panthers played in front of 700 people in the sold out Club Nosturi and now there were about 1000 pairs of eyes packed into The Circus in Helsinki.

Thrash, Mosh and Die…
MUNICIPAL WASTE @ La Respuesta, San Juan, Puerto Rico
Saturday September 29th 2012
Produced by K&K Entertainment, the Thrash, Mosh & Die concert turned out to be a fun, diverse event in terms of the bands' performances and crowd reaction. It was a real challenge getting to the event: my car broke down the previous night and I could not find somebody to hitch a ride with! Finally, after many attempts, I managed to hitch a ride with Dennis Rivera, bassist/vocalist of local Thrash Metal band D.O.D.
If it wasn't for him letting me tag along, this review wouldn't have been possible, so I am very thankful to him! |
