Stratovarius with Pagan's Mind - Sept. 18, 2009 - Toronto, Canada

Stratovarius with Pagan's Mind
Local openers - Borealis, Lords of Hera

Sept. 18th, 2009 @ The Opera House
Toronto, Canada

Review and pics by EvilG

It's not often you get to see one of your favorite bands for the FIRST time. Such was the case with my trip to see Stratovarius in Toronto.

Before we dive into the review, a note about the format... As you may notice, the pics, while passable, are not incredible like the ones you'll find in most of our other live reviews. This is because I do not usually photograph live shows since I live in the wastelands where no bands visit and as such have no real experience taking live photos. As well, even though I did have a photo pass, there was no special front of stage area to get up close to try for awesome shots.

Lastly, this review will not only cover the performances but will review the experience and treatment that we received as VIP ticket holders.

Shawn Drover of MEGADETH

the below photo from Shawn's MySpace page.

Shawn Drover isn't the usual mouthpiece for Megadeth as we've all read/see countless interviews with the legend himself, Dave Mustaine. So when given the opportunity to speak with Shawn, I was interested to hear his story on Megadeth, the line-up changes (especially surrounding the departure of his brother Glen from Megadeth), and the status of his previous band Eidolon which is currently on hiatus...read on!

ATHEIST - Whole band.jpg

The Floridian jazz-tinged tech-deathsters Atheist, disbanded in 1994, but 12 years later, decided to resurrect the band back from the dead. Since then lots of things have happened for the band. Atheist signed to the French Season of Mist label (as well as Gnostic, featuring three members from the Atheist camp). Then they hired a young, but very talented rookie named Jonathan Thompson to play the second guitar in the band, and have done quite a lot of an intensive touring for the last couple of years - playing at as many festivals as possible, added with some well selected clubs gigs as well.

On August 15th 2009, Atheist finally hit the Finnish soil for the very first time during their whole history, performing an exclusive show at Jalometalli festival in Oulu, which many consider a true mecca for the Finnish metal. Just 2 hours before the show, I managed to hook up with both Atheist frontman Kelly Shaefer and skin basher Steve Flynn, who both shedded some light on what´s going on in the Atheist camp at the moment - telling when people can expect a new album from them and so on.

So guys, to get started...

Shane Clark of 3 Inches of Blood

It's probably fair to say that 3 Inches of Blood are one of the most original Metal acts of the past six or seven years. Though they borrow a little bit from here and there, they still manage to have their own transcendent sound. With deadly anthems and a powerful sonic onslaught, they are the purveyors of pure North American Metal. Recently Shane Clark, guitarist extraordinaire, spoke to Metal Rules about their latest opus.
