Extol
Extol
September 2013
Released: 2013, Indie Recordings
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Metal-Rules.com UK Team

Extol came into existence in the early 90´s during a period of time when heavy metal was commercially dead, now 20 years on they’ve released a self-titled album, and that can mean only one thing...

Change. No one likes change. Although, saying that, this album is as melodic as it is technical and brutal, it’s volatile enough to rip your teeth from your gums and make you head bang your way into a concussion.

The formula of harsh verse and clean chorus’ is utilised in its own cliché way, but that doesn’t stop Extol making one hell of a good album. With a guitar sound that has the power of a charging rhino and vocals that sound like they were stolen off a drill sergeant, ‘Extol’ is an album not to mess with. ‘Betrayal’ opens the album to some thrash-tastic riffs and song writing, up until the chorus and David assists in the clean vocals in the background. The production of the album is grainy but the vocals cut through easily, as demonstrated on ‘Wastelands’ and ‘A Gift Beyond Human Reach’. The band also add some strings for a break during the title track ‘Extol’ before making a stupendous finale on ‘Unveiling the Obscure’.

20 years down the line and Extol still do their best and rock out...but be warned, too much rocking to this album may lead to an Extol addiction and lead to permanently listening to this album.
