Prime Evil
Evilution
October 2013
Released: 2012, Inferno Records
Rating: 2.5/5
Reviewer: JP

This month will be reviewing a number of releases on the small, but very cool French label, Inferno Records. There have a decent roster of about 20 bands from around the world that they release on vinyl, Cassette and CD. This month I will be reviewing releases by Axecutor (Brazil) Clenched Fist (Brazil), Death Rides a Horse (Denmark), Elvenstorm (France), Lady Beast (USA), Prime Evil (USA), Rampart (Bulgaria), Razorwyre (New Zealand). Please feel free to enjoy all the reviews in this feature.

Prime Evil is one of those (many) bands that never made it back in the 80’s but are back due to the massive upswing in popularity in classic/traditional Metal from the 80’s. Bands that never made it, (probably for good reason) are surging back as specialty labels like Shadow Kingdom and Stormspell troll the depths for rare and unreleased EP’s and demos, clean them up and issue them on CD with good packaging. Occasionally, spurred by interest from the Metal community, the band resurfaces and reforms and this is one of those cases. Let’s face it, Prime Evil never made it past demo level 20-30 years ago but they are ‘back’ with a brand new 3-song EP.

EVILUTION was an uninspired choice for a title by this American duo/trio/quartet, as there at least 30 other bands have used that name including some bigger bands like Easy Rider and PowerGod. No matter. The 8-minute EP serves as a nice introduction to new fans and the Death/Thrash they wrote and perform is actually very solid. Not surprisingly Venom is touchstone but less rock and roll, heavier and faster than old Venom, but more along the lines of what the band is doing today.

The three cuts are pretty relentless in terms of pace and attitude but this may be a case of too little too late. Prime Evil is now on my radar and I hope for a decent full-length with a bit more of an identity in the near future.
