Portnoy, Sheehan, MacAlpine, Sherinian
Live In Tokyo (Blu-Ray)
October 2013
Released: 2013, Eagle Rock Ent.
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Celtic Bob

This Blu-Ray is a musician’s dream come true. The line-up is of stellar proportions and as Mike Portnoy says at the beginning of the show; “There are a lot of notes to be played tonight” and he wasn’t kidding.

Right from the get go they are one fire and do not slow down at all. Every song is played with precision and looks like it comes almost natural to them. As a non-player this concert was a little over the top to watch but I can appreciate the musicianship and music. The one thing I did get from this was that Mike’s kit was angled and to the side of the stage giving him a seat up front. This is a unique idea that makes the drummer look like more of an equal in the band rather than be pushed to the back. Many of the songs were unfamiliar to me but the couple I did know were executed very well. For “Shy Boy” I would have preferred to have heard David Lee Roth Handle the vocals as that was the version I first heard when EAT ‘EM AND SMILE first came out in 86. Either way Billy’s performance was filled with that killer bass that we’ve all etched in our brains. From the instant it starts we recognize the song. I’m sure fans of these musicians and their respective bands will be able to do the same with the other performances.

A well shot concert with excellent sound and visuals. This is a music based show so don’t expect flashpots and firebombs to be going off or massive lighting effects. LIVE IN TOKYO is a Blu-Ray to sit back and appreciate the skill that this group of four brings to the stage.
