Pat Travers
Can Do
October 2013
Released: 2013, Frontiers Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Pat Travers is a name that should be familiar to all metal heads out there as, despite the fact that he was never the heaviest rocker around, his early albums, particularly the live classic, LIVE! GO FOR WHAT YOU KNOW, always had enough bite and guitar fireworks in them to win over a crowd. Pat’s been doing his thing for nearly 40 years now and despite a detour into the blues in recent years, he’s back at age 59 with CAN DO, a pure hard rock effort.

Indeed, CAN DO is Travers at his best with powerful rock songs like “Stand Up” and “Dust & Bones” standing tall. Mixed in are wistful ballads (“Wanted”) and more commercial fare like “Diamond Girl”. It truly covers all of the bases of Travers’ career. Travers himself sounds great, his gruff voice aging gracefully while his guitar work is as sizzling as ever. That being said, the 12-track album could stand to trim some fat, as we don’t really need a cover of Annie Lennox’s “Here Comes the Rain Again” or a 6-minute jam (“Keep Calm & Carry On”).

Whatever your poison though, CAN DO is a thoroughly entertaining album. You can hear the fun that Travers and his band had recording it and that bleeds through the songs, making CAN DO one of the most fun listens I’ve had this year.
