Waking the Cadaver
Real-Life Death
November 2013
Released: 2013, Amputated Vein
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Aaron Yurkiewicz

I happened to catch New Jersey noise mongrels Waking the Cadaver during their recent trek opening for Dying Fetus and Exhumed. And while I walked into the gig fully prepared to write them off as just another generic deathcore outfit, I actually found myself caught up in the energy of their live show and appreciating their brand of Fetus inspired death slam. While certainly not nearly as articulate as either of the bands that they opened for that night, they’re also not nearly as derivative as most of the “metal” CDs you’ll find in a Hot Topic these days. So how does that live energy translate across their latest release, REAL-LIFE DEATH? Surprisingly well, now that you ask.

The basic gist of Waking the Cadaver’s sound is bottom heavy riffs and blast beats, the occasional breakdown, and vocals that range between generally decipherable death barks and unintelligible gurgling that sounds like it was recorded in the bottom of a toilet bowl. The general tone and presentation of the disc reminded me a bit of Suffocation’s EFFIGY debut, albeit with more unintelligible gurgling that sounds like it was recorded in the bottom of a toilet bowl. REAL-LIFE DEATH is bookended by two pretty great tracks, “Insult to Injury” and “Life Lesson”, both of which are bound to inspire your inner aggro and get some momentum going in the pit; if you’re looking to get a taste of the band, start with either of these tunes. The rest of the album runs hit and miss; “Money Power Death” is catchy with its Hatebreed-esque gang vocals, and the gore friendly “Snapped in Half” is just balls out crazy. But tunes like “Lumped Up” fall back on silly, tough guy posturing, and “Molested to Death” is more than just a wee bit misogynistic. But in all fairness though, you don’t listen to a band called Waking the Cadaver for elocution lessons or sensitivity training…

So yea, cynical curmudgeon that I am, I’ve spun REAL-LIFE DEATH more than a couple of times and I’ll probably spin it a few more before we’re all said and done. It’s a good listen that delivers exactly what you’d expect to get out of it – heavy riffs and a temporary distraction from your mundane lives. REAL-LIFE DEATH should be available by the time you read this, but check out the Waking the Cadaver Facebook page for purchase info.
