“Thor, The Mighty! Thor, The Brave! Crush the infidels in your way.” (Manowar, 1984)

Before Iron Maiden. Before Metallica. Before Slayer. Even before Manowar… there was THOR! In 1973, a young musician records his first demo/single in Vancouver, Canada what was to become the germination of ‘Body Rock’, and the eventual evolution into one of Metal mightiest warriors and most prolific and enduring acts...THE MIGHTY THOR! In celebration of his 40th anniversary and in tribute to Canada’s longest running Metal band, I am very proud to present short reviews of 13 releases from across his career. Feel free to enjoy all the reviews in this feature including…

One thing I always admitted about Thor is that he is not afraid to write songs about himself. ‘I’m Thor’, ‘Hail Thor’ and now ‘Thor Against The World’! After the triumph of TRIUMPHANT in 2002, the mighty Thor entered his most prolific and productive phase of his entire career. He produced eight studio albums in eight years and perhaps THOR AGAINST THE WORLD was one of the ones that got lost in the flood. At this point Thor had a decent small label, pretty good distribution and a good reputation having turned the corner into a respected heritage artist but none of that can salvage a lackluster album, the fourth of eight that came in rapid succession. Thor had a new writing partner, Frank Meyer and it seemed to be a decent fit. The cover art is striking, it is a cool image.

The album opens with an odd industrial, very keyboard heavy, intro/overture piece that incorporates segments of songs on the album before ripping into the title track. This is a return to the heavier Thor style, fans know and love. The guitar tone is very 70’s in tone as well as the drums, almost back to his Kiss inspired roots. The songs are classic Hard Rock songs and cuts like ‘Megaton Man stand out from the rest. There is a fairly sentimental and well down ballad called ‘Turn to Blue’ showcasing Thor very decent singing voice. In his mellower tones and the album ends on a strong note with another ‘Thor’ song called ‘The Coming Of Thor!’ I’d suggest while not his strongest work, THOR AGAINST THE WORLD is an under-looked piece in his catalogue.
