Church of the Dead
Vol. 2 Terror Tales
Released: 2013, Self Released
Reviewer: Aaron Yurkiewicz
Here’s one of the many things that I love about Helsinki’s Church of the Dead. In the “About” section of their Facebook page, it simply reads “Death Metal band from Helsinki, Finland”. No fluff or superlatives needed; Church of the Dead plays DEATH F@#KING METAL! Okay, so they do go on to describe a bunch of old school influences, but you get the idea. It seems like it was just a few months ago that the band released their debut EP, VOL. 1 STAY OUT OF MY GRAVE, but Church of the Dead is already back for more with the appropriately titled follow up EP, VOL. 2 TERROR TALES. Continuing in the footsteps of its predecessor, the tunes on VOL. 2 pay homage to the death metal glory days when horror reigned supreme and the music was still intimidating. Ah yes, good times indeed…
Some of the other things I love about Church of the Dead? The tunes…Like the last time we met, VOL. 2 TERROR TALES features 3 primary tracks and an intro. The Evil Dead inspired “Something Came Out of the Woods” is the proper opening track and sounds like a cleaned up Repulsion leftover (i.e. awesome and heavy as balls). “Maggots in Your Brain” teeters between Asphyx dirge and Dismember speed, while the closing “Hole in the Head” offers up a wee bit of symphonics and modern black metal inspiration. The songs themselves all satisfy, but at a scant 15 minute run time, VOL. 2 TERROR TALES is unfortunately a bit underwhelming and left me wanting more.
Judging from the press materials, the pending VOL. 3 RAVE TO THE GRAVE is slated for release before the end of 2013, which 1) I’m stoked for if it happens, and 2) I sincerely hope that Church of the Dead repackages all 3 EPs into a single release so that fans can get the full experience of what the band has to offer. Whether you’re old school, new school, or never been to school, Church of the Dead is just a Death Metal band from Helsinki, Finland…but dammit, they’re really, really good.
