STaRT @ ONe
Released: 2013, Independent
Reviewer: Celtic Bob
The DWaRfS are back with a new album of old recordings. This album was left in the can since the early 90‘s and has finally been released to much praise. This lineup does not feature the original band or the Classic STAND TALL one. It features Newfoundland born Gerry ‘Cod Dwarf’ Finn on guitar (replacing Mike Dwarf) alongside Dunk, Rusty and Ronbo.
The 9 tracks that make up STaRT @ ONe were recorded some 20 years ago just after the METHOD TO MADNESS disc but the industry took a turn for the worst and it remained in the can until now. It’s too bad the DWaRf Nation had too wait so long for the official 6th album. Regardless, we finally have the album and the DWaRfS have played some shows to support it with new bassist Johnny ‘Dwarf’ Fenton stepping in for Ron.
For us DWaRf fans this album is perfect. It has all the elements of a Classic DWaRf album (which it essentially is) from Russ’ outstanding vocals to Darrell’s over the top drumming all woven together by Finn’s guitars and Ron’s steady bass lines. Tracks such as “Down In Hollywood” really spotlight the heaviness of the band with the over the top drumming and killer guitar I mentioned a moment ago. Gerry and Darrell just let loose on the track and go for broke. Another example of this is on “Psycho Circus” from the distorted guitar riffs at the start right on through. Full on DWaRf groove! 7 out of the 9 songs are heavy rockers while the other 2 are slower ballads. Both are really nice, especially “The Crowd” which closes out the disc.
A perfect sixth release from one of the Country’s greatest (and possibly most underrated) bands. It is a crime that we have had to wait this long to hear it but we can now rejoice and enjoy the music. Hopefully we will not have to wait another 20 years for more DWaRf music.
