Seven years seems like a long time to complete three graphic novels but you cant rush the creative and artistic process! The wait is over and BLACK METAL Part III is finally available. If you are not familiar with the Heavy Metal-themed graphic novel series it may be a good idea to read my reviews of Parts I & II, first published here in 2012.

The format, design and layout are the same and there are some clever touches. Put the series side by side and look at the spine and you will see what I mean. For the purposes of this review, I’m going to assume (perhaps a dangerous thing to do) that people have read my earlier reviews or at least familiar with the series. Having said that, there is not too much I can write with giving away the plot and conclusion to the story.

This is by far the most epic book in the series. I understand the word ‘epic’ is highly overused but in this case it fits because it truly is a story of heroes having a long journey, an epic saga in the truest sense of the original meaning of he term. Everything is done on a grand scale. Giants, demons, angels, Satan and more all battling it out in one apocalyptic battle for the fate of all mankind. I was also pleased to see the return of FrostAxe! My feelings for Part III mirrored those of Part II, in that I felt the elements that made Part I, so special to me, carried less emphasis. More specifically all the in-jokes, references and even stereotypes that I felt made Part I so clever just didn’t have a role as the story concluded. I though it was really well-written and I did not foresee how the events would turn out; the story was very engaging.

For such an epic series, I can’t help feeling Part III was mildly anti-climatic. Perhaps I’m just disappointed that the series I discovered seven years ago is now over because the story is great! All good things must come to an end. The circle is complete and now the entire BLACK METAL series is available for you to check out the most metal comic series in the history of the universe at one time.
