Shadow Host
Demon Hunter
May 2014
Released: 2013, Metalism
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: JP

Shadow Host released this EP in early 2013 in order to have something on the market to help fans keep them in mind. It was about a year prior they released their 4th album BRINGER OF REVENGE, in late Dec 2011 and then they released their fifth album in late, late Dec 2013, so the DEMON HUNTER EP fits right in the middle, bridging the gap between the two studio albums. In the interim the band signed to Metalism so this is the bands first release for the respected Russian label.

DEMON HUNTER is very well done, it is a six track EP with some treats for true fans. The booklet is great and always they have a nice cover art with a warrior wielding his sword. There are liner notes, lots of live photos and lyrics as well. There are a couple of updated tracks from BRINGER OF REVENGE but this time with new vocalist, Alexy on vocals. Up next is a cover by the band Master (the Russian one) in the form of ‘God Save Our Hate’. Next is a re-recording of a track called ‘ Dragonsfire’s Burning’ which originally appeared on their second album NEVERLAND, back in 2002. Lastly, DEMON HUNTER has two live tracks recorded on their 2012 tour. The re-recorded versions aren’t dramatically different but fans familiar with the originals will hear the changes. Essentially the band winning style and formula of pure power is unchanged. Soaring vocals, but not too high, twin guitars, thundering drums and a good pace all contribute to the bands awesome sound.

DEMON HUNTER is great for die-hard fans and collectors with good value at 30 minutes. The production is great and it serves as an excellent introduction to the new vocalist as well. I think everything these guys do is pretty flawless, but I rated it a bit lower, because it is just a fill-in EP.
