Beyond the Veil of Flesh
May 2014
Released: 2014, Vic Records
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Aaron Yurkiewicz

Raise your hand if you’ve ever found yourself in this predicament – you’re tired of revisiting your Dismember collection, you’ve worn out that last General Surgery EP AND that last Entrails disc. And a new Entombed album??? Fugghetaboutit. So what’s a metalhead to do when you’ve got a thirst for Swedish death metal that you just can’t seem to quench? Might I suggest Gluttony and their debut full length BEYOND THE VEIL OF FLESH?

Make no bones about it, Gluttony is pretty much a paint-by-numbers exercise in 90’s-era Swedish death metal. But going into BEYOND THE VEIL OF FLESH with eyes and ears wide open, Gluttony deliver on exactly what they promise. Death obsessed, zombified anthems of gore wrapped in old school riffs with absolutely no mid-range in the amps - it’s like 1992 all over again. Familiar? Yes. Original? Not by a longshot, but still there’s plenty to enjoy – particularly standout thrashers like “Eaten Alive”, “Coffinborn” and “Post Mortem Decapitation”. Just because something sounds familiar doesn’t mean that it doesn’t rage just as hard.

I’m not gonna lie – I enjoyed the hell out of BEYOND THE VEIL OF FLESH. It's an homage to a place and time in metal history long since past, but when I just needed some old school riffs to vibe on and some bare bones blood n’ guts to make it through my day, Gluttony delivered exactly what I was looking for. But Life Goes On...
