Hypocrisy
End Of Disclosure
May 2013
Released: 2013, Nuclear Blast Records
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Despite the on-going success of his side project (main band?) Pain, Peter Tagtren continues bless fans by lashing out with Hypocrisy’s crushing death metal at a respectable pace. I sadly missed the band’s last outing (2009’s A TASTE OF EXTREME DIVINITY), but I absolutely loved their 2005 opus, VIRUS, which I thought was an absolutely vital record.

After providing a fitting career retrospective with the HELL OVER SOFIA DVD in 2011, 2013 brings us Hypocrisy’s latest stab of visceral death metal and if anything, it proves that Tagtren and co. have lost none of the fire that caused them to start playing this music 20+ years ago. Hypocrisy has never been the most crushing death metal band around (although they are certainly no slouches!), for me it has always been their distinctive song writing and melodic style that set them above the masses. With that in mind, Hypocrisy again presents us with a master class of melodic death metal, specifically with the foursome of “Tales of Thy Spineless”, “The Eye”, “United We Fall”, and “44 Double Zero”. Those four songs highlight all that makes Hypocrisy great, including passionate vocals (all growls, no clean singing this time out), hypnotic leads, and just pure spectacular writing of old-school death metal. Truly, even at this advanced stage, Hypocrisy sounds more lively and essential than almost any other band.

I, for one, am ecstatic that Hypocrisy continues to be the vigorous heart of death metal. Long may they reign.
