Across The Seven Seas
June 2013
Released: 2013, Steamhammer Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Artlantica is another trans-Atlantic supergroup, so let’s get the roll call out of the way right up front. The band features Artension’s guitarist Roger Staffelbach, vocalist John West (also of Artension, and notably ex-Royal Hunt); also contributing are keyboardist Mistheria (Rob Rock, solo stuff), and drummer John Macaluso (ex-Ark, Yngwie Malmsteen, TNT, Riot etc. etc.) and guest spots from none other than Chris Caffery, Dani Lobel, and Steve DiGiorgio. That’s quite the stable of musicians right there. Of course, all of that talent begs the question; does the sum of the album equal the greatness of its parts?

Artlantica plays a particularly energetic & heavy brand of power metal with hints of the progressive – surely no surprise to fans of the members’ various other bands. Even though the band doesn’t provide musical surprises, they certainly do provide nearly an hour of damn fine songs. “2012”, despite its lyrical redundancy, provides a majestic and explosive beginning to the album, which continues with the powerful “Devout” and title track. West, Staffelbach, and Mistheria (the “core” of the band) are masters of their craft and continually display their talents through the songs, whether it’s Staffelbach’s infectious riffs, Mistheria’s somewhat understated keyboard shading, or West’s overpowering (in a good way) vocals. The rest of the album follows suit with most songs zipping along at high speeds, particularly the excellent “Fight for the Light”. The album ends with the loud-to-soft-to-loud again “Nightmare Life” where West almost sounds like another awesome vocalist, Lance King (!).

I knocked the album’s score down a bit for having a dull ballad and an unnecessary instrumental but every other song on here is killer. Seriously, it’s taken me a ton of listens for these songs to sink in, but now that they have, I can’t stop playing the album. Killer stuff!
