Who the Hell are Dust?

I heard about a CD coming out by a band called Dust but had no idea who they were. I then read about this release on a music forum and became interested. The next day a copy shows up in the post. I was psyched to say the least. Dust were a band from the early 70’s that featured Kenny Aaronson on Bass (who went on to record with Billy Idol, Michael Monroe, Stories, Brian Setzer...et al.) and Marc Bell on Drums. Marc would later change his name to Marky Ramone while singer Richie Wise along with Producer/Lyricist Kenny Kerner would go on to produce Kiss’ first 2 classic albums.

While these 2 albums on a single CD may not be you typical stereotype Metal albums there are the foundations for what would come. The Sabbath influence on the instrumental track “Ivory” showcases the heaviness of this American band. At this time all the heavy bands such as Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Sabbath came from the UK so having a heavy band from the US was groundbreaking. It is Marc’s drumming that is really at the forefront on these albums. His drumming is fast, energetic and heavy, the way it should be. The song “Learning To Die” is a fine example of this as is “Suicide”. Not all selections on this release are heavy, there are a few mellower tunes to balance things out.

If only Dust could have held it together a little longer they would have been huge. Their second album; HARD ATTACK even charted but they didn’t progress from the first album due largely to lack of a booking agency, they dissolved. This is a release that should have made them a household name. The only complaint with this release is that the first album is last on the CD and the second is first. A minor complaint but it would have been more appropriate to be chronological. To really appreciate Dust you should seek out the double LP Record Store Day set that features the original album outside jackets.
