Ergholae Somptator
Raptus du Fané
July 2014
Released: 2014, Self Released
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Aaron Yurkiewicz

Ergholae Somptator is new two-man ensemble hailing from Tolouse, who dabble in the lowest of low-fi blackened thrash metal. The fellas are currently promoting their recently released demo RAPTUS DU FANÉ. While it’s far from the most polished thing you’ll hear this month, it’s certainly not the worst.

Caveat emptor, RAPTUS DU FANÉ sounds every bit like a homemade black metal demo. It’s raw, downright sloppy at times, and sounds like the pair simply mic’d a rehearsal session and hit “record”. But beneath the fuzzy, stripped down surface, you’ll find eight tracks that tend to grow on you if given the chance. Tracks like “Folie comminatoire” and “Champs absurd” put their own spin on the traditional black metal melodrama with some genuinely mean riffs and enough attitude to make it sound convincing. Also, the main vocals sound an awful lot like Attila Csihar from back in the day, so you’ve got that going for you as well. And then you’ve got bizarro stuff like the closing “Cantharellaceae”, which is basically just an exercise in percussion. All things being what they are, RAPTUS DU FANÉ is a mixed bag of ideas and execution, but I found myself coming back for repeated listens to hear what else I’d missed previously.

What Ergholae Somptator lack in refinement, they make up for in originality and general quirkiness. Get out of your comfort zone and try something different on for a while; head over to the band’s Bandcamp page where you can stream RAPTUS DU FANÉ in its entirety and purchase it for dirt cheap if you’re so inclined.
