Raise The Curtain
July 2013
Released: 2013, AFM Records
Rating: 5.0/5
Reviewer: Celtic Bob

When I first heard there was going to be an Jon Oliva solo album I was interested, but

when I heard “Father Time” for the first time I was literally blown away. I played the track over and over again, loving it more and more with each play. I couldn’t wait for the album to get released as I knew it was going to be a killer disc.

Jon Oliva’s debut solo album RAISE THE CURTAIN is the perfect blend of his past projects. While it may not be quite as heavy as JOP or Savatage, this album has slightly less of the huge production of the T-SO project but equally as good. It is the perfect blend of all his previous projects and then some.

For RAISE THE CURTAIN Jon has used the last of his late brother’s unreleased music. Sadly there is nothing left, but Criss would be proud that Jon got his music released for the fans. One of these Criss Oliva pieces was the opening riff to “Father Time” which was the second riff he ever wrote. Hard to believe he was only 14 at the time.

The music on this album are very reminiscent of GUTTER BALLET and STREETS era Savatage. Jon’s vocal’s remind you of “Downtown Jesus”, especially on the song “Stalker”. This could be the modern day “Downtown Jesus” with it’s powerful delivery and storytelling. Not every song on the album is similar in style to the old Savatage stuff, a song like “Can’t Get Away” possibly wouldn’t work anywhere but here. This is a really powerful slow song that makes you step back for a moment. Yes it may be a slower track, but it fits the flow of the album and demonstrates what an amazing songwriter Oliva is. He can write the heaviest of Metal songs for JOP, or full on big orchestra production for T-SO or a slow song for a solo album.

I cannot say enough positive things about this album. RAISE THE CURTAIN is Metal perfection. It showcases Jon’s talent as a singer and songwriter. He has outdone himself here.
