Obituary
Frozen In Time
January 2014
Released: 2005, Roadrunner
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Helias Papadopoulos

Editors Note. Metal-Rules.com was founded in 1995 as a forward thinking site. Our goal is, and always has been, to support Real Metal. The decision was made that very rarely do we ever go back and review an album from before 1995. Does the world really need another CD review of Master Of Puppets, Powerslave or Screaming For Vengeance? We don’t think so. We have always supported what is happening now.

Starting in January, 2014, as we head towards our 10,000th review and the 20th Anniversary of Metal-Rules.com, we are looking back and filling in a few gaps in the review database. We want to complete the post-1995 review catalogue of some of the bands that we have supported since 1995, when very few, if any website were supporting real Metal. It’s fun to go back and revisit some of these albums that we did not review when they were first released. Enjoy!

Obituary a fundamental act in the development of death metal and FROZEN IN TIME helped the band retaining and keeping that up. The CAUSE OF DEATH has built up an impressive atmosphere, grasping from the first notes of ‘Infected’ and plunges into the swamps of Florida over and over. The thrashing death- riffs are mixed with doomy passages that can blow your mind. FROZEN IN TIME tries to repeat the guttural atmosphere of CAUSE… but in an unsuccessful way.

This means that FROZEN IN TIME is not a bad album. It’s a groove-oriented death metal with all the Obituary trademarks (John Tardy’s death grunts, Donald Tardy’s groovy drumming and Allen West’s sharp and ‘rotten’ guitar riffs). The dilemmas start with the question: Alright, but why not to listen once again to CAUSE OF DEATH and SLOWLY WE ROT and sit down to deal with this?.

The truth is that Obituary do not offer anything new by the release of FROZEN IN TIME. For those looking for more modern sounds the last two discs of the band will say absolutely nothing. FROZEN IN TIME has been released in the tempest of metalcore releases and this makes FROZEN a little be ‘invisible’ and ‘unfashionable’.

Personally speaking, FROZEN… is definitely a great slab of death metal package with murderously contagious death riffs and venomous gore lyrics pack an exhilarating punch, marking the quintet out for future acclaim under the strict guidelines of Scott Burns (album’s production). This is an absolute and solid death metal album that surely cannot be compared to band’s previous masterpieces (CAUSE OF DEATH, SLOWLY WE ROT), but this is a shot in the arm of those metalcore and mock-groovy ‘metal’ bands that are around.
