Live At The Mystic
January 2013
Released: 2012, Frontiers Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Unless you’re a forest-dwelling black metal orc, winter is a time to find a warm place to hide, and what better place than a packed club filled with people head banging to heavy metal? To get you comfortable, this month we’ll be covering six recently-issued live albums from the likes of: Gamma Ray, Helstar, Mr. Big, U.D.O., Vicious Rumors, and Y&T. Grab a beer (or your drink of choice), get warm, and enjoy the music!

Note: some of these were released as CD/DVDs; however the reviews cover the CDs only.

After a long period of relative inactivity, Y&T have really been hitting the boards hard lately. First came their first studio album in over a decade with 2010’s kickin’ FACEMELTER record, now the band have hit back yet again with this double-live album celebration of both the band’s career, and the thirtieth anniversary of their breakthrough album, EARTHSHAKER.

Captured live at one of the band’s favorite clubs (the titular Mystic), this record is bursting with Y&T energy. The band whips through 21 songs over their history and although the focus is on their classic albums (EARTHSHAKER, BLACK TIGER, and MEAN STREAK), the band sprinkles in a few cuts from their less heralded late ‘80s/early ‘90s material as well. More surprisingly, the band includes a whopping 6 songs from their 2010 comeback, including the highlight of the album: an absolutely rollicking version of “I’m Coming Home”. I’ll never understand why the band thinks the juvenile “Gonna Go Blind” is worth playing live, but all in all, it’s a great set list that shows how consistent this band has been over the years.

The band is on fire throughout the show, with main man Meniketti easily proving that his pipes are just as strong as they were decades ago. He and long-time guitar man John Nymann shred their guitars to pieces – hopefully they feel as youthful as they sound! The rhythm section doesn’t particularly stand out, but they get the job done. Best of all – no boring solos!

Given the huge amount of new songs, and the fact that it’s been 14 years since Y&T’s last live album, LIVE AT THE MYSTIC is a great gift to the fans. After some lean years, if you needed proof that Y&T is still a hard rock force to be reckoned with…this is it.
