Acrimonious
Sunyata
January 2013
Released: 2012, Agonia Records Rating: 3.0/5 Reviewer: Metal-Rules.com UK Team Acrimonious are a 5 piece black metal band from Athens, forming in 2003. “Sunyata” is their 2nd full length album after their full length debut, “Purulence” released in 2009. These occult, black metallers have returned with more of a rock influence with their new release but still maintaining their ritualistic vibe. I had never heard of this band before, I heard good things so gave it a chance. It’s not as good as I thought it would be. The album kicks off with a very haunting intro. I only wish that the album actually sounded just like this. With “Glory Crowned…” you get a slight early grunge feeling, except that there just feels like a bit too much going on. “Adharma” is one for the cradle of filth fans. The rest of the album, although it is a good sound, just seems a little uninteresting and all sounding very much the same. “The Sloughted…” is much more melodic, probably one of the strongest off the album I feel. “The Hollow Wedjat” has the potential to be a single but again, the song itself is a tad drawn out. The overall sound and production on the album is very good and the band’s sound is there, but not just to its full potential yet. It’s still a good listen but maybe when you really feel like it.
