Part V: A New Beginning
February 2014
Released: 2013, Indie
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: JP

Alberta Assault! In early 2014 Calgary, Alberta will be hosting the WACKEN METAL BATTLE. This contest has regional acts perform to audiences and judges who then decide who gets to go further in the contest, with the winner getting a trip to perform at Wacken. Check out for more details. This is a good a time as any to do my bi-annual, quick, regional round-up of releases from Alberta Metal bands. Even though not all of these bands may be competing in WMB, I’d like to thank the bands who provided review copies for me for my radio show and The bands are Armifera, Black Pestilence, Bloated Pig, Enemyus, Exit Strategy, Ides Of Winter, Kataplexis, Misanthropy, Scythia, Throne Of Vengeance, Trollband, Vile Insignia and Villainizer. Please feel free to check out the other reviews in this feature.

Misanthropy is a side-project of James Neil (aka Dr. Killgore) of Gales Of Avalon. He and some of buddies got together watched some crappy 80’s horror movies, started jamming and suddenly Misanthropy was born. I’m sure copious amounts of weed and beer and 80’s VHS tapes went into the recording sessions. The boys camp up with enough material for a pair of EP’s which they released simultaneously. Take that Guns ‘n Roses! This review covers the EP called PART V: A NEW BEGINNING.

If you know your 80’s horror films the title will be familiar. If not it is the sub-title of the 5th movie in the Friday the 13th series. For a bit of a self-described joke band, there is quite a lot of hard work went into this quality EP. The booklet has nice black and white hand-drawings for each song and the booklet has lyrics and liner notes and so forth. In terms of lyrics, the songs follow some scenes from the movie and there are samples from the movie as well. The music is a good paced Death/thrash blend. The production is also very good for an independent presentation. If anything this EP is the slightly heavier of the two, with cuts like ‘Axe To The Bald spot’ just being pure juicy death.

The danger, if it can be labeled as such, is that if a band like Misanthropy, (or any band) choose to define themselves as a bit of joke, it may limit the broader appeal. I’m on the fringes of the in-joke so I get it but many people may not see the humour. However, the band doesn’t care, they did it for fun and for themselves only. If people like the EP, great. If not, too bad. I think it is worth checking out especially for fans of horror-based Metal.
