Mastic Scum
February 2014
Released: 2013, Massacre
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Helias Papadopoulos

If you are familiar with what is going on in the death/grindcore scene nowadays, you have to pay attention to this Austrian band. Mastic Scum made an excellent death metal album in the veins of obscured and rotten bans of Napalm Death, Morbid Angel, Malevolent Creation and Deicide and adding some aggressive elements through complexity and professionalism. Now, they release their new fifth album called CTRL and it represents the heaviest Grind/death metal that Austria’s metal scene has ever seen.

The band has done the best work in its long career by far while they got the best production that have ever in their albums. They created something that doesn’t show any lacks and there are no fillers here among the eleven songs of CTRL. Songs like ‘D1S3MBOD1M3NT’ and ‘Cause and Effect’ got melodic parts among the technical industrial sounded guitars.

Mastic Scum incorporate melody, brutality, a syncopated groove into their solitary industrial parts. The guitars riffs are catchy and heavy as hell. Though there are clear references to thrash metal and nice breakdowns in ‘Perceptive Illusion’ something that does not happen to other songs of CTLR.

Mastic Scum present a great grind/death album with all its infusions of thrash, heavy and a few industrial metal. CTRL is the standout album of the year. It just plain kicks ass. It is totally a rapid and gruesome slab of filthy messed up death/grind bombs. This album is highly recommended to every grind/death metal fan that loves grind horror from the bowels of the death underground.
