The Fiction Maze
February 2014
Released: 2014, Inner Wound
Rating: 5.0/5
Reviewer: JP

Persuader is one of our favourite bands here at All three previous studio albums have been awarded perfect scores of 5/5. EVOLUTION made our sites Top 10 list in 2004. WHEN EDEN BURNS made our sites Top 10 in 2006. I have a personal attachment to the band as well as I bought the debut THE HUNTER when it came out in 2000 before the promising Swedish record label, Loud ‘N Proud went out of business. Evil G, the site founder and I have been on board since the beginning we have championed this band to anyone who would listen. You can imagine my happiness to discover after eight years they have returned with a brand new, full-length studio album.

THE FICTION MAZE is amazing. It is easily the first album to secure a spot in My Top 10 for 2014. The band is incredibly consistent. The have the same logo, the same band members (for the past three albums in a row) and the same strong song-writing and performances and production. The only change is that when Dockyard I record label went out of business they have moved over to Inner Wound Recording.

THE FRICTION MAZE is powered by the amazing vocals of Jens Carlsson. It’s been said before and it will be said again, his tone is like a young and angry Hansi Kursch. He just has so much energy, intensity and passion in his vocals, many singers could learn from him. All the members are killer musicians in their own right with pummeling drums, blazing solos and raging riffs. The band has, thankfully, not altered the power/thrash blend of their signature sound. There are virtually no distractions from the power onslaught, maybe just a hint of occasional acoustic guitar on the introduction of the title track. The whole album is fast and when it comes to those choruses they are so catchy, with big sing-along sounds and huge gang-vocals, they stick in your mind right away.

I could go on and on about how good Persuader are but I will cut it off here. As a reviewer I tend to rate on the positive side, I like to support the bands I like and ignore the ones I don’t. Why waste time and energy writing negative, cynical reviews and making enemies? Let weak bands live or die on their own merit. However, because I do rate albums on the higher side, I rarely give out perfect scores. Over a decade I’ve written over 1450 reviews for this site and only awarded a perfect score to about 40 albums (that is only 0.02%). So when I rate Persuader’s magnificent fourth album, THE FRICTION MAZE as a perfect album, it is not hyperbole. It is that good and it will be in my Top 10 of 2014.
