Sonic Reign
Monument In Black
February 2013
Released: 2013, Apostasy Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: UK Team

Sonic Reign are a 2 piece black metal band, formed in 1997 and hailing from Germany. They released their first full length album, "Raw Dark Pure", in 2006. 7 years later they are back with their second offering.

I had never heard of this band before and, based on how I tend to feel about duo bands, I can't say that I was looking forward to hearing this too much. Luckily for me, the album is pretty awesome. It's very easy to compare them to Satyricon but I would say that that is a compliment. The first track, "Abhorrence Vs Scum", is a perfect set up for the album, with it's near thrash, moody guitars and quick pace.

The title track, "Monument In Black", is another perfect example of how this band will go a long way. Strong riffs show that they are almost untouchable. "A Doctrine Unreachable" has to be my favourite one. It's an angry song and I feel like I want to get out there and do a protest!

Even though a lot of the songs may sound slightly the same, the album still has a very good flow to it.

The overall production for this album is excellent. The sound is extremly clear and everything flows together well. Even on songs that are ment to sound grainy end up sounding very clear. I find it so hard to believe that this band only has 2 members!

Other bands should seriously take note as this is how it should be done.
