Breed Of War
Blood
February 2013
Released: 2012, Indie Rating: 3.0/5 Reviewer: JP Breed Of War have been kicking around Calgary for some time. They recently put out their debut EP, simply titled BLOOD. I’m not thrilled with the album name. Two major metal bands (both Vader and OSI) have albums already called BLOOD. Aside from that, the band seems to have their act together as their first introduction to the Metal market is a well-produced, 5 song EP that runs just under 30 minutes. It’s a nice package, good cover art, lyrics are included and it’s look professional for an independent release. Breed Of War plays an admirable type of modern thrash but thankfully free of Metalcore influences. The songs are punchy and aggressive but not blisteringly fast. The vocals are a standard yell/shout combination that many of the young bands employ today, not totally understandable but aggressive and angry. The riffs are fiery as are the solos, there is lots of talent in the band. I’m heating a bit of European influence (maybe Darkane/Soilwork/Norther) type stuff with an American sensibility. The band could use a bit more excitement in the song-writing. They play it a bit safe but I know they have the talent to stretch out a bit in terms of composition and performances. BLOOD is a solid and commendable debut EP. It’s a tough market out there but with a bit more experience and innovation, I think they will have what it takes. ![]()
