Summoned from the Void
August 2013
Released: 2013, Memento Mori
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: UK Team

Finland’s Solothus bring us their first full length record, “Summoned From The Void”, a crushing Doom/Death Metal album which could be confused for an EP due to the fact that there’s only six songs on it; however, the album clocks in at 43:22, with songs that range between the eight and eleven minute mark.

The band focuses on the most basic of elements from both of the genres that they mix in their sound, which gives way to a record that spews forth angst and aggression constantly. Except for the intro keyboard piece, what the bands offer is pure head bashing fun.

The guitar riffs on this record are brutal: be it on the more Death Metal sections of “Hordes of the North”, or the laid, almost jazzy feel of the title track, there is something about “Summoned from the Void” that keeps listener interest through inventive arrangements. When the band stretches their chops, it happens in such a subtle way that it may not appear that the band is actually testing outside the formula.

Most important, the band does not sacrifice heaviness, yet manage to imbue their music with interesting sections where, be it through the drummers performance, or the angst-ridden dual guitar work, they do manage to provide a slab of Doom/Death Metal that is memorable.

The world which this record describes is a bleak place that despite its horrifying appearance, manages to evoke beauty from that horror. There is no pretentiousness here, just guitars, drums and growled vocals that combine to create this beautifully ugly sound.

The bass is audible, yet it never really goes beyond keeping a steady pace along with the drums for the guitars to shine. If you love stripped down Doom/Death Metal that relies on the traditional ingredients to push forward its message, then go and search for this album right now.
