From Birmingham, England comes Nightblade with their second full length album Closer To The Threshold, a straight up fast paced album of traditional Heavy Metal with definite influences of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio and the traditional NWOBHM sound.
Whilst some might feel that this is a format that has been done to death, Nightblade come forth with an album that is still filled with songs that sound both original and fresh to the genre that will definitely get your toes tapping and your heads nodding.
Production wise the album has a certain retro feel to the production that I definitely like a lot. The vocals are recorded very nicely and sound like they could have come directly from a classic NWOBHM album of the 80s. The guitars sound nice and clear and have a really nice tone to them that sounds similar to old Judas Priest or Megadeth and the drums and bass both kick through the speakers with authority.
The songs themselves are all very strong as well and as the band quite rightly says in their bio, it’s a set of tracks that are “all killer and no filler”, which I’d definitely agree with. Each song definitely has enough strength to stand on its own and there are some very nice riffs going on throughout the album and choruses which I’m sure will become fan favourites to sing along to at live shows in years to come, especially on tracks such as You’ll Always Remain.
All in all, this is a really solid album that contains a whole host of really good stand out traditional Metal tracks and it’s one that I think will definitely grow on me more and more in time.
If you’re a fan of Traditional or NWOBHM style Heavy Metal then I’d definitely recommend checking these guys out!
