Somewhere In The Circle
August 2013
Released: 2013, AFM
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: JP

Arguably one of Argentina’s bigger Metal bands along with Rata Blanca and Beto Vasquez’ Infinity project, Helker have been churning out the Power Metal for well over a decade. After toiling in the regional scene putting out four albums, the band is now starting to get some international recognition. I would suggest that for most people their new album, SOMEWHERE IN THE CIRCLE may be their first exposure to the band (myself included) due to their signing to AFM Records. This album is actually the English language version of their last album. Combined with a new drummer, new guitarist and English lyrics, Helker are about to make a splash in the international Power Metal talent pool.

The 11-track album is just loaded with fantastic, classic/Power metal songs. Vocalist Diego Valdez is a rare talent with the force and power of Dio himself. His voice has so much character, I would rank him right up there with the ranks of Jorn Lande and Russell Allen. On some of the mid-tempo songs like ‘Ghosts of The Past’ his voice really gets to shine. The songs don’t always just rely on speed, there are nice variations in tone and tempo but never forgetting the ‘power’ in Power Metal. The riffs are chunky and the rhythm section drives the songs along at a good pace. The band is not especially original but they execute the classic form so well and the songs are so enjoyable that they don’t needs tricks and distractions, just great song-writing and performances carry the album.

I think AFM is throwing quite a bit of weight behind this incredibly talented band as they have Tim Owens and Ralf Scheepers on guest vocals and Matt Sinner was on board for some co-writing and producing. Even without those heavy hitters SOMEWHERE IN THE CIRCLE is an incredibly strong album on it’s own merits. I’m late on the Helker bandwagon but better late than never, especially for a band this enjoyable.
