The Negation
Paths to Obedience
April 2014
Released: 2013, Mortis Humanae Productions
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Aaron Yurkiewicz

As predictable and tired as the black metal genre has become, every so often you get a band that just seems to hit all of the right buttons at the right time and totally kills it. Ladies and gents, allow me to introduce you to The Negation.

The French quartet released their debut PATHS TO OBEDIENCE towards the end of last year, and as cynical as I may be about the genre at times, The Negation is an example of how to do it right. With a flair for pungent, synth free traditional black metal, the band follows in the footsteps of names like Marduk and Gorgoroth with meaty, guitar centric tunes that rely more on musical substance than artificial spooky atmosphere. The riffs are scary enough on their own, and vocalist ASA is snarls like a trapped animal ready to gnaw his own limb off. Opening track “Red Wrath” is probably PATHS TO OBEDIENCE signature track and is available for streaming via Bandcamp and YouTube, but the album’s ten tracks seethe with ample supplies of vehemence and hostility (“One God” and “Last Rites” are particular highlights).

PATHS TO OBEDIENCE is heavy, surprisingly melodic at times, and scathingly discordant at others. This would be a great album under any circumstances, but considering that it’s The Negation’s first offering, it’s a promising sign of what’s to come. PATHS TO OBEDIENCE is available now through Mortis Humanae Productions.
