Orange Goblin
A Eulogy For The Fans
April 2013
Released: 2013, Candlelight Records
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Waspman

After five years of inactivity, British stoners Orange Goblin have been very active lately. Starting with the February 2012 release of their seventh full length, A EULOGY FOR THE DAMNED, the band has been on a tear with tours, festivals, and now their first live album, A EULOGY FOR THE FANS, which documents the band’s headlining performance at Bloodstock 2012. Not too shabby.

As for the album itself, it will of course come with the usual fan complaints about the set list, but I think the band did a good job picking the songs overall. The sound is also pretty good, I was pleasantly surprised given the fact that this was a festival performance; maybe the crowd could have been a bit louder in the mix when they responded to Ben Ward’s exhortations, but all in all, it’s solid, with all the instruments clear, even the bass. Vocally, Ward is up and down throughout the set which is unfortunate as his powerful bellow is one of the band’s calling cards. The rest of the band does their best to pick up the slack though, turning in an energetic performance which includes an absolutely vicious version of “The Filthy & the Few”.

Given that this is the band’s first live release in their almost 20-year career, I would have hoped that it would have been bigger – double length and hitting every album, but as it is A EULOGY FOR THE FANS is packed with the band’s patented stoner metal; fans will definitely be satisfied.
