Lullacry
Be My God
November 2001
Released: 2001, Century Media Rating: 3.5/5 Reviewer: Waspman Ever wondered what Sentenced might sound like with a female singer? Well, wonder no more, just go out and pick up this disc! Yup, these Finns are traveling the path already blazed by their country mates, but, largely thanks to Tanya’s oh so sexy vocals, they manage to create a sound they can call their own. The album opens with its best song, and one of its catchiest, “Embrace Me”. A faced paced rocker, this song will sink deep into your grey matter. Very cool and the best female fronted song I’ve heard since “Beware The Heavens” (Sinergy). The rest of the album covers all of the usual bases, with the grinding “Be My God” to the bluesy “Firequeen” while also throwing in a couple of nice ballads along the way. It’s all good stuff, but nothing quite matches up to “Embrace Me”, although “Without The Dreamer” comes damn close. The star of the show though, is Tanya. Highly expressive and alluring, her vocals carry most of the songs that would be merely average up to the next level. She may be hot, but like Doro, this girl can fucking sing! There’s more ballsy power in her voice than in most of the power metal genre combined. All of the rest of the band are good musicians, especially the guitarists who fire off some great riffs, but on the whole, they are too near to Sentenced right now to be totally amazing. This is nothing more than a quality metal album that is made great by a fantastic vocalist.

Be My God
November 2001
Released: 2001, Century Media Rating: 4.0/5 Reviewer: Pete Every now and again, I'll get a CD to review that just hooks me from the opening track and Finland's Lullacry got me this month with their latest release BE MY GOD. This CD contains 11 tracks of great riffs, catchy hooks and the rich vocals of Tanya (featured on the cover in all her beauty). Some have referred to Lullacry as a goth rock band, but I don't find any trace of it here. Instead, it's musically steeped in the style of bands like Sentenced and Lacuna Coil. Tanya has one of those voices that rocks and commands your attention on opener "Embrace Me" and "Without the Dreamer", yet show a softer side on the ballad "Into Your Heart". Lullacry could soon very well be a leader in the the latest wave of Finnish bands invading the scene, definitely a band to watch. Website: http://www.lullacry.com
