Open the Crypt
November 2010
Released: 2010, Me Saco Un Ojo Records
Rating: 5.0/5
Reviewer: Luxi Lahtinen

´Only death is real…´ - one wise man once invented this famous slogan to describe his band (as his wishes became all true). Old-school Death Metal is also as real as it can be and a band like this young Finnish Death Metal act called Krypts can work as some sort of indicator for that.

Krypts have only released their 4-track demo thus far, titled OPEN THE CRYPT, in two different editions (that are all sold out by now) – and UK´s underground label Me Saco Un Ojo Records pressed the demo on vinyl (500 copies only) that also are – speaking in theory, completely sold out – just like the original CD-R editions from the actual demo.

There´s been a pretty huge fuss going around this young Finnish old-school Death Metal act – and after hearing the demo, I can clearly understand why they seem to be drawing more Death Metal diggers near to them than a fresh pile of cow shit does for flies.

Krypts truly play old school Death Metal the way as it should be played in the first place. It´s amazingly murky, more twisted than your grandpa´s most sexual perversions, beautifully eerie, corpse-heavy and catchy as the quickest reproduction rite. It actually has all those – even tiny elements that emphasize the words ´old-school Death Metal´ what this sub-genre of Metal actually does mean into the very core of these particular words in question. Take for example bands like Incantation, Abhorrence (Fin), Immolation and the demo era Demigod, then squeeze them brutally into one tight package – and the final outcome could be something close to all these aforementioned names. Hell, even Krypts frontman Antti Kotiranta sounds deceptively like Craig Pillard; the guy who sang on Incantation´s semi-legendary debut album ONWARD TO GOLGOTHA. Each song on this demo stands out on its own, but a song called “Dormant of the Ancients” is clearly a masterpiece of the finest ingredients of pure Death Metal art.

Don´t hold your breath any more but check out these grave-smelling messengers from Finland immediately if you are a serious Death Metal fan. Krypts are undoubtedly one of the best new discoveries in 2010 that I have succeeded in digging up from the deepest underground depths this year. They are amazing – and they fuckin´ slay!!
