Released: 2011, Nunfucker Productions
Anytime someone hands me a cassette to check out, it always catches my eye being an old-school cassette guy that I am. This time it was one of the boys in Gatekrashor who asked me to give it a listen. The packaging is pure thrash. The four-panel fold-out, J-card is red and white and the cassette itself is blood red. The tape is labeled Side: Speed and Side: Kills. Beautiful. Whoever designed this (Nunfucker Productions according to the liner notes) knows their Metal history. The J-card has lyrics, pictures of the band and the Speed Metal swirl/logo. I was sold on this baby before I even heard a single note. Sometimes you CAN judge a tape by it’s cover! The cover art sorta reminds of the old band Cranium with lots of posers getting killed by chainsaw-wielding True Metalheads.
This Various Artists cassette compilation has three young Canadian artists each get a song per side and the bands are Demona (Quebec), Gatekrashor (Alberta) and Excavator (British Columbia). Demona apparently used to be South America and she has a great voice and delivery. Their cuts have appeared on various EP’s in the past. Calgary Gatekrashor donated an older demo track for this comp in the form of ‘Evil Steel’. Lastly, Excavator makes their debut appearance on this comp (aside from a demo) and both tracks are new.
There is not an enormous amount to report other than all of these young, energetic bands live and breath Speed Metal and thrash in out with energy, power and intensity. All the songs are simple, catchy fun, headbanging good tunes that will appeal to any old dude like me that grew up in the first wave and any new young fan who enjoys the sound of when Metal was fun and pure.
