Video Hits: Volume I (DVD)
Released: 1999, Warner Brothers
Van Halen MKI sort of pre-dated the video era by about a decade but once the MTV/Much Music era…did they ever embrace it! They had quite a few videos from the first five albums that were not seen as often but once 1984 hit and the multi-platinum 1984 album came out, it was off to the races.
This is one of the weaker video compilations in my collection. It is packed in one of those eco-friendly, cardboard covers that get thrashed very easily. The title VIDEO HITS is boring. The cover is boring, just the flying VH logo. There are no bonus features on this single disc. There is no booklet. The videos are out of order. Videos are missing. I suppose that is why they called it ‘Volume I’ so they could add the other videos later but as of Spring 2015 we have been waiting 19 years for Volume II’. I think it was released to tie in with the greatest hits CD called BEST OF VOLUME I, released a few years prior. In retrospect there are 16 videos that were not included. We need a good DVD collection with all 34 Van Halen videos in one place. 11 of the videos in this 14 video set are Hagar era videos. Man, those guys wore a lot of pastel colours, looking more like preppies or George Michael than hard rockers! The videos were all very well done and there were a few that did not get as much airplay, so it was nice to revisit some songs.
In the final analysis there is not much reason to own this contractual obligation DVD. It is fun to throw on in the background and enjoy the Hagar-era hits but really there is very little value unless you need to own a random 1/3 of the Van Halen videos in a stand-alone set.
