Too many changes have been done in Slayer camp last 3 years. 1) After almost 30 years they decided to sign up with a new record label, 2) Jeff Hanneman has passed away, 3) Dave Lombardo has left the building and Paul Bostaph filled in. 4) Gary Holt, the leader of Exodus, is the new guitarist. (This is the very first time there is a guitar replacement!)
After all that, REPENTLESS is out. This is the eleventh studio album by Slayer, and we all have to confess that it was one of the most expected albums of the year together with Iron Maiden’s BOOK OF SOULS.
What we’ve got here? Extremely good songs with quick and awesome riffs, like "Repentless", the inconceivable "Take Control", the gem "Implode" or punk meets thrash "Atrocity Vendor" and especially the "You Against You". On the other hand we have the classic Slayer - morbid and sick motif with "When The Stillness Comes", where Araya is creepy and the atmospheric introductory of "Cast The First Stone" that results in a riff that pierces minds. There is no moderate moment on the album, the sequence of the songs is perfect and REPENTLESS is a complete album. I don’t think that would be another one classic Slayer album, but this outcome is simply amazing.
As for the musicians, Tom Araya is certainly impressive, Both nerve, power and hate in his voice. We also must be specifically mentioned in Bostaph playing who does all shivers and sadly Lombardo got all the credits the past years for his drumming and there was no space for any word about Paul (don’t you think?). Kerry King for the first time in history, is responsible for the majority of the tracks except for “Piano War” which is a song composed by Jeff Hanneman. I would say that Kerry isn’t a good composer not as much as Jeff was. Undoubtedly. Gary Holt is a well-known guitar player and probably the best choice for Hanneman’s shoes!
To sum up, REPENTLESS is a good follow up to WORLD PAINTED BLOOD. Personally speaking I was waiting a more hardcore stuff by Kerry King, but the outcome is completely thrashy as hell. For good! There is obviously no point in comparing REPENTLESS with what they turned out early in their career, but in my opinion it looks at the eye CHRIST ILLUSION and WORLD PAINTED BLOOD. REPENTLESS is a totally Slayer album, not the best of their entire marvelous career, but you can find too many goodies in here!
